YMO, Sweet Robots Against the Machine, Cornelius, Kimonos, pupa, Skeleton Joe… a dream essence of Tokyo’s highest pop standards. Released today, METAFIVE’s first full-length album is the sharpest crossroads of all of these luminaries. It amply proves how pop sensibilites are best read in their own context: music this ethereal would (and does) sound just naff coming from good ol’Europe – where it would quickly descend into techno by numbers, no doubt. Hailing from Japan, however, it is Heaven. Echoing the grandest Acid-drenched euphoria while purging it of the retrospective clumsiness (and ending on a classic YMO sample!), the bridge between 1:39 and 2:09 on the brand new video (below) is as close to pop perfection as we can aspire in early 2016.
