Here’s a gem from the archives. My first round at the Royal College of Art was as a guest student in late1988, when the Illustration Department was celebrating 25 years of existence. Dan Fern kindly welcomed me for the fall term, and needless to say the whole experience opened up my mind exponentially.
This is a photo of the cover of the “Breakthrough” catalogue, a limited edition treasure of experiments in illustration throughout said 25 years. Each copy of the catalogue was actually assembled manually in a production line at the Illustration studio: everyone, staff and students, was recruited for this exercise at the very beginning of the term. And this, of course, turned out to be the best possible rite of initiation to the whole London/RCA experience back in 1988.
